Project Description
Tumwater High School required a full-scale abatement of a variety of hazardous materials. Seven hundred linear feet of school hallways required demolition and approximately 10,000 sq. Ft. of asbestos subflooring had to be removed. New flooring was required using 1 1/8” subflooring plywood and ¼” underlayment in order to lay new VCT tile finished with the school mascot logos.
Further, student’s lockers required a full replacement and modification to the existing framing was necessary to accommodate the new lockers.
Work specific to building C required the replacement of the entirety of the south side siding, equating to 5,000 sq. ft, due to excessive water damages and a new weather barrier and reinforced flashing was added.
All hallways required a new painting, aluminum finishing was added to all doors, and metal window frames were retouched with high-performance coating paint.
Challenges
The abatement of hazardous materials always brings about serious challenges. To monitor the abatement of the scope, the client utilized an outside consultancy, EHS international, INC.
GNG was given 60 days to complete the entirety of the work scope and multiple abatement testing, such as a PCM Phase contrast microscopy (PCM), was required both during and following our renovations.
Solutions
To finish the considerable amount of work on the client’s timeline, GNG decided to split Building A into four sections. Abatement subcontractors would take one-two weeks to abate each section and then receive clearance from the EHS consultant. By the second week, all subcontractors would immediately begin flooring, painting, electric and carpentry work. We applied this timeline to each section to ensure a streamlined workflow.
Results
The abatement of the hazardous materials was a complete success, as well as all finishings, paintings and locker installment. The entirety of the school district personnel was extremely satisfied with GNG’s work and all abatement procedures passed muster with the outside consultancy’s testings and standards.
